Summer Is In Sight

Summer is just around the corner and the end of the busy golfing season has arrived. As is necessary every year, the summer maintenance schedule begins on the golf course. Tomorrow the green aerification will be the first project of the summer months and the golf course & practice facilities will be closed Monday, May 14th and Tuesday, May 15th. This aerification is always difficult to see happen when the greens are in such impeccable shape like they currently are, but it is ultimately required to keep them healthy. In just a couple weeks though the greens will have healed and be back to rolling as smoothly as ever. Transition from the winter rye to the summer bermuda grass will also be occuring over the next month or so. With warmer night time temperatures this will occur pretty naturally but can be spurred along at times by lowering turf heights and sometimes spraying chemicals to eliminate the rye. We anticipate an excellent summer of golfing even though many of the members will not be around to enjoy the club facilities again until the fall.

Protect Rancho Vistoso’s Street Lights

The Vistoso Community Association has decided to undertake a study regarding the street lights which line Rancho Vistoso Boulevard and give the community much of its unique appeal. The street lights along the main road not only make the area attractive but add to the safety and overall character of the community. Due to concern regarding the costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the lights, the HOA Board of Directors is considering several options, one of which would be to eliminate the street lights altogether. Stone Canyon feels this would be extremely detrimental to the overall community from a safety standpoint for motorists and pedestrians alike, not to mention the loss of appeal within Rancho Vistoso that the night time lighting brings. For anyone who travels Rancho Vistoso Boulevard in the evening it becomes immediately clear what a tremendous benefit this lighting adds.

The Stone Canyon Club Appoints Mike Russell New Director of Club Operations

Today marks the beginning of Mike Russell’s appointment as the new Director of Club Operations at The Stone Canyon Club. Mike takes over the top position at one of the nation’s top-ranked golf clubs after prior Director of Club Operations Todd Huizinga accepted a similar position at Boot Ranch in Fredericksburg, TX. Todd accomplished a tremendous amount during his tenure at Stone Canyon, having been the original Director of Golf when the course opened back in February of 2000. Certainly his leadership over nearly 13 years of employment has played a key role in elevating the club to being recognized as one of the nation’s best, as ranked in several distinguished golf publications such as Golfweek & Golf Digest. Todd’s energy, drive, and commitment will certainly be missed at Stone Canyon but will be a tremendous asset for Boot Ranch to have acquired. The ownership, staff & members wish him well in his new endeavors.

However, Mike has long been the heir apparent at Stone Canyon, having worked side by side with Todd during the opening of the golf course over 12 years ago. Mike is a Class A PGA Professional and brings a wealth of knowledge to his new position. As the Head Golf Professional at Stone Canyon Mike has developed close bonds throughout the membership and possesss the instituional knowledge to continue Stone Canyon’s ascention towards the top of the elite clubs in the country. In addition to his time at Stone Canyon over the last ten years, Mike also spent a three year stint as the General Manager/Director of Golf at The Golf Club at Vistoso, This experience as Vistoso’s General Manager allowed Mike to accumulate substanital first-hand experience with the intricacies of running a golf operation.

Mike also brings not only his business acumen to Stone Canyon’s top position, but also an exceptional golf prowess. Mike is the current two-time defending Chapter Champion of the Southern Chapter of the Southwest Section PGA. He’s also qualified several times for the National Professional Championship and throughout many other golfing titles & accomplishments has proven to be one of the elite club professionals. Mike is excited about the challenges of his new role at The Stone Canyon Club and is proud to continue the tradition of excellent leadership at Stone Canyon that Todd forged previously.
